Man On A Ledge

Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13
Length: 102 Minutes
Cast: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Anthony Mackie, Ed Burns, Kyra Sedgwick, Ed Harris, Génesis Rodríguez, Pooja Kumar
Director: Asger Leth
Written By: Pablo F. Fenjves
Genres: Thrillers, Crime Thrillers
Plot: “In the heart-pounding thriller ‘Man on a Ledge,’ Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) makes a desperate and life-threatening move to prove his innocence after he is framed for the theft of a rare, prized diamond. Recently escaped from prison and with nowhere else to go, Nick climbs onto the ledge of a towering skyscraper, inviting the eyes of New York City to anxiously watch as one wrong step could mean plunging to his death. But as one police negotiator soon learns, Nick’s daredevil stunt, captivating the eyes of the public and media, masks a dangerous ploy to reveal the truth about his tarnished name. With the help of his brother and with time running out, Nick’s intricate plan must work perfectly, but when you’re on the 25th floor ledge of a building, going down takes on an entirely more hair-raising meaning.” ~Man On A Ledge Official Movie Website

This was a pretty good movie. It’s a crime thriller so of course it got my attention. There is definitely a lot of action and lots of twists and turns. Sam Worthington does a good job of playing most of his roll from the ledge of a building. And Elizabeth Banks really surprised me. I’m glad she hasn’t been type-cast because I really like her. It’s good to see her in a serious roll and she did it well. Ed Harris always plays a really good bad guy so there was no surprise there. The relationship between Jamie Bell’s and Génesis Rodríguez’s characters was pretty cute. The ending was kind of predictable, but the overall story line and action made up for it.

Water For Elephants

Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Length: 121 Minutes
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Christoph Waltz, Paul Schneider, Jim Norton, Hal Holbrook, Mark Povinelli, Richard Brake, Stephen Taylor
Director: Francis Lawrence
Genres: Drama, Romantic Dramas, Dramas Based on Bestsellers, 20th Century Period Pieces, Dramas Based on the Book, Period Pieces
Plot: “Based on the acclaimed bestseller, Water for Elephants presents an unexpected romance in a uniquely compelling setting. Veterinary school student Jacob meets and falls in love with Marlena, a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. They discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top, and come together through their compassion for a special elephant. Against all odds — including the wrath of Marlena’s charismatic but dangerous husband, August — Jacob and Marlena find lifelong love.” ~Rotten Tomatoes

This won’t be the first time you’ll see me say this … I REALLY don’t like romance films. They are SO unrealistic it makes me nauseous. But I’m in love with Robert Pattinson and ever since Cruel Intentions have been a fan of Reese Witherspoon’s. So I watched it knowing what I was in for and enjoyed it. The fact that it’s also a period piece helped a lot (I love period pieces). This movie reminded me a lot of Titanic for some reason. Maybe because it was the main character, Jacob Jankowski’s, flash back which lead into the story and the rest of the movie … the way Rose’s flash back in Titanic lead into that movie, and of course the fact that they are both love stories. The difference in the two, the bad guy in Water For Elephants dies and Jacob and Marlena (Reese’s character) live happily ever after. For a romance though, it was a good movie. I don’t want to spoil it for you and give you the exact details of how the movie plays out, but it was well acted and the story line was good. If you like love stories, watch it … if you like Robert Pattinson, definitely watch it. 🙂

New Year’s Eve

Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Length: 117 Minutes
Cast: Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Ludacris, Robert De Niro, Josh Duhamel, Zac Efron, Hector Elizondo, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Til Schweiger, Hilary Swank, Sofía Vergara
Director: Garry Marshall
Genres: Comedy, Romantic Comedies
Plot: “In this star-studded romantic comedy, the fates of a diverse group of New Yorkers are wound together on New Year’s Eve — including one expectant couple hoping their baby will be the first to be born in the Big Apple after midnight.” ~Netflix

Well, this was a romance comedy. Again, the romance part of it was unrealistic … everyone found it. The comedy was cute. I found myself chuckling (not laughing) out loud a handful of times. I like the way all the characters were connected in someway without realizing it. I didn’t figure out the final couple until the very end either so there was that tiny twist. The best I can say about this film is that it was cute. Garry Marshall also directed Valentine’s Day, so this film was a lot like that one. If you like one, you’ll like the other. It’s almost a mirror image, just a different holiday. I did like it … didn’t love it.

Until next time, this has been a real housewife in Houston moment.
