I admit I didn’t stay up to watch the entire VMA awards last night. I caught Miley Cyrus’s performance with Robin Thicke (just plain creepy), Kanye’s performance (forgettable), and of course Justin Timberlake’s performance (loves it!). Honestly, I felt really old and out of touch that I only even recognized about half of the award nominees’ names. True to VMA form, the topic of this morning is Miley’s outrageously, controversially, bizarre performance. So I thought I’d chime in with my 2 cents …
First, let’s be honest .. the VMA’s are notorious for allowing “creatively” bizarre performances. You are talking about it this morning, aren’t you? Mission accomplished.
Personally, I thought Miley’s performance was about fitting for a young, parying, 20-something year old … meaning it kind of creeped me out (but I’m almost 40), I would not let my children watch it, and I would consider myself somewhat of a failure as a parent if I ever saw my daughters behaving that way in any public venue much less on national television in front of millions of people. The fact is, she is not a kid anymore … she may be trying a little to hard to drive that point home, but I believe it was Madonna who taught us that any attention (even controversial) can keep a celebrity relevant and sometimes even rocket their careers. Both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera went through this same thing. Unfortunately, it’s (more often than not) a growing pain of the industry. Hopefully, Miley will evolve into a legend like Madonna and not a Lindsay Lohan train-wreck.
With all that being said, I get ubber-annoyed when people throw out the he/she-must-behave-in-a-respectable-manner-because-they-are-a-celebrity-and-automatically-considered-a-teen-idol card. I’m from the old school where my parents, grandparents, and Jesus were my idols. Take some responsibility for whatever parenting knowledge you possess before you say something so asinine please. Pay attention to your children, what they are listening to on the radio, what they are watching on television, and who they are idolizing. If it’s behavior you don’t want to teach them to emulate (i.e. Miley’s twerking skills on a man almost twice her age, lack of fashion sense, or her obscenities with a foam finer), then don’t allow it in your home … teach them that such behavior isn’t respectable or attractive … go to Church and take them with you … do more to become the one they want to be like and are looking up to. That is your job as a parent, not Miley’s or some sports figures’ or anyone elses.
This is just my 2 cents … feel free to leave your own but don’t expect everyone to agree with it. 🙂
